Q: I don’t have a license; can I start working in security today?

A: No, the State of California requires any contract or proprietary security officer be licensed through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS).

Q: How do I get a license?

A: BSIS requires any applicant to be: at least 18 years of age; a United States citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States; no misdemeanors convections within the last 3 years (exception for any moving violation under $499.00); no felony convections within the last 10 years; attend “Powers to Arrest” and “Weapons of Mass Destruction” training and testing (open book exam) with a passing score of 100%; complete a background check with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); and pay all City and State fees.

Q: How long will it take to get a license?

A: The process depends on how you apply: on-line (recommended) or by mail; BSIS, DOJ or FBI backlogs.  However, according to BSIS the on-line process is about 10-14 business days and the process may be up to 60 – 90 days.

Q: Once I’m licensed can I start working on my own? Or do I have to work for your company?

A: No, in order to work as a Private Patrol Operator (PPO) you must obtain a contractors license, refer to www.bsis.ca.gov website for more details.  And No, you do not have to work for our company, the license is yours and you may work for any PPO licensed contractor or proprietary organization.

Q: If I work for your company, will I make more than minimum wage?

A: Yes, if you have a valid guard card.

Q: Do I have to take the training and testing for a license if I already have Post Certification?

A: Yes, Post certified; active or retired peace officers are required to complete all training, testing and application processes.

Q: I recently had a background check for my last job do I need to do it again?

A: Yes, if the background check was not conducted in conjunction with obtaining a guard card.

Q: I used to work as a security officer but my guard card is expired, do I have to take the test again?

A: Yes, BSIS sends each licensed security officer a renewal notice prior to the expiration date of any license.  If you did not renew within the BSIS allotted time frame you will have to start from the beginning.

Q: My guard card has been revoked, can I work in security?

A: No, you are not eligible to work for any security contractor or proprietary organization.
